The third of the 4 Cs to classify a diamond is Clarity.
Too much importance is, usually, given to the meaning of “impurities” in a diamond, starting from the erroneous assumption they are defects. To explain the concept: think of observing a marble or wood floor, you can never imagine a marble or parquet without veins or natural signs, without the “signs” of their naturalness…for polished diamonds is the same thing!
A bad use, linked to the lack of culture of jewelry vendors, has left that for years you were using this parameter as the main means for classifying the quality of a diamond, since even the most incompetent seller could easily say you something on the presence of inclusions in a diamond after using a magnifyed loupe, without being able to give the right value to a diamond. This practice did not allow the expansion of the market for diamond jewelry in Europe as occured in the US where diamonds have market for their beauty and for their brilliance, never for their fingerprints (as they are called in USA the internal features of a diamond). While it is true that “pure” diamonds – without internal characteristics – are less than 1% of the market, that’s why the US market is so important for diamond industry.
More precisely, the grading scale of Clarity of the GIA – Gemological Institute of America identifies 11 degrees of Clarity to 10x magnifications:
